At one point in most of our lives, we sacrificed function for fashion. We bought the shoe that looked good but didn’t quite fit right, and we paid for it. Maybe not right away, but eventually. So how can we avoid this? By buying the right-sized shoes! Here at the Shoe Tree, we take the time necessary to measure your foot to ensure a proper fit, which means optimal comfort.

If you’re on the market for a new pair of shoes, here are a few things to consider.

  • Visit a shoe store later in the day. Almost everyone experiences swelling in their feet the longer they’re on them. Come by the shop in the late afternoon for your measurements so you can avoid getting shoes that end up being too tight. While you’re at it, make sure you’re standing for the measurement. How you stand and spread your weight will change the shape of your foot. Stand tall, look straight ahead, and center your weight.
  • It’s also important to measure your arch. That’s from your heel to the ball of your foot. The ball of your foot is where your big toe bends, and your shoe should bend in the same spot. When you’re trying on a shoe, rise up on your toes and pay attention to when the shoe bends. If it happens before or after the ball of your foot, then the arch of your shoe doesn’t fit.
  • Just like age, shoe size is nothing but a number. As we’re sure you’ve seen, a size 9 in Clarks isn’t the same as a size 9 in Merrell, just like a size 7 in Saucony isn’t the same as a size 7 in New Balance. Worry about the fit, not the number.
